Best Operating Grants for Nonprofits

The Story County Community Foundation (SCCF) offers a Major Grant aimed at enhancing community life in Story County. This initiative seeks projects that address significant community needs, promote innovative solutions, and foster collaboration among residents. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status. Grants are intended to support diverse areas such as education, health, and cultural initiatives, ensuring sustainable impact and community involvement in planning and execution.

Fall Grant Cycle Pilot 

The 2026 Fall Grant Cycle Pilot is the second cycle in the SouthCoast Community Foundation’s new biannual grantmaking approach. Building on the Spring pilot and feedback from nonprofits, community partners, and reviewers, the Fall cycle offers a streamlined application for funding opportunities supporting a range of community needs across the SouthCoast. 

In 2026, the SouthCoast Community Foundation began piloting a biannual grant cycle, with funding opportunities offered in the spring and fall. The new approach is intended to provide greater predictability and a more accessible application process for nonprofits, while helping the Foundation gather information about community needs and the reach of its funding.  

The 2026 Fall Grant Cycle will help us identify what is working, gather feedback from applicants and grantees, and refine the process for the 2027 Spring Grant Cycle.   

Program Areas

Funding is available for organizations and requests addressing one or more of the following areas: 

Basic Human Needs and Family Stability – including food access and food security, housing stability, utilities and other essential household needs, and services that help individuals and families meet basic needs. 

Youth Development and Recreation – including positive youth development, enrichment activities, and recreation. 

Education – including programs and services that improve educational opportunities and outcomes for children, youth, and adults. 

Health and Wellness – including programs and services that improve physical, mental, or community health and well-being. 

Economic Self-Sufficiency – including services that help individuals and families increase financial stability, employment opportunities, or economic independence. 

Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment – including prevention, intervention, treatment, and support for children and families. 

Domestic Violence Services – including services and support for individuals and families affected by domestic violence. 

Arts and Culture – including arts and cultural programs that expand participation in the arts, strengthen community well-being, engage residents, and use arts and culture to respond to community needs. 

Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors. Applications are accepted from mid-November until mid-March. Scholarship award recipients will be announced at the high school awards ceremony. 

Van Cott Family Memorial Scholarship

Established in memory of Kermit Van Cott and his son Forrest to provide tuition assistance to a graduating Senior from one of the High Schools in Susquehanna County, with priority given to Blue Ridge, who will major in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Horticulture, Botany, Forestry, or Agriculture and who will matriculate at college or a post-secondary degree program.

The CNPS Student Research Grants Program supports research on California's native flora, aiming to protect these vital plants and their habitats. Founded in 1983, it encourages diverse applicants, including underrepresented groups in science. Grants are awarded based on alignment with CNPS's mission and the significance of the research in areas like conservation and ecology. The program honors several awards, including the Doc Burr and Hardman Native Plant Research Awards, to promote innovative botanical studies.

The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) provides vital technical and financial assistance to farmers and forest landowners in Illinois. It focuses on enhancing agricultural productivity while preserving natural resources. By facilitating improved water quality, soil health, and wildlife habitats, EQIP promotes sustainable practices in farming. Producers can receive support for various initiatives, ensuring that conservation efforts align with agricultural goals. This program is essential for mitigating environmental impacts and fostering sustainable agriculture in the region.

The Region Grants Open Grant Round: Hunger Relief, sponsored by the Land O'Lakes Foundation, aims to combat food insecurity in rural communities. Grants between $1,000 and $20,000 are available for organizations supporting food banks, meal programs, and community gardens. With a total investment of $500,000 annually, this initiative prioritizes nonprofits with 501c3 status serving specific regions in the East and West. The program seeks to enhance the vibrancy of member-owner communities while fostering educational and community vitality.

The Belvedere Community Foundation Grant Program aims to enhance the quality of life for residents of Belvedere and the Tiburon Peninsula through funding various community projects. Grants support initiatives in education, public safety, and environmental preservation, among others. Eligible applicants must be located in Marin County and demonstrate how their projects align with the foundation's mission. The program encourages matching funding and focuses on community enhancement.

The Woodberry Poetry Room Creative Fellowship invites diverse creators, including poets, writers, and scholars, to engage with its extensive collections. Funded by the T.S. Eliot Foundation, recipients receive a $5,000 stipend and a one-week residency at the T.S. Eliot House in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The fellowship promotes inclusivity and welcomes applications from individuals of all nationalities, fostering creative exploration and collaboration in a supportive environment.

Stater Bros. Charities Grant supports nonprofit organizations dedicated to enhancing community well-being in Southern California. With a focus on hunger relief, education, children's health, veterans, and pet welfare, the grant provides funding between $500 and $2,500. As a 501(c)(3) organization, Stater Bros. Charities has donated over $38 million to local causes, ensuring that funds raised stay within the communities served by Stater Bros. Markets, benefiting those in need.

The Hans & Cay Jacobsen Charitable Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of children and young adults in Lake and Sumter Counties, Florida. The foundation collaborates with community resources to enhance support for long-term change. Organizations must be tax-exempt and serve the local community effectively to qualify for funding, fostering hope and empowerment for urban youth.

The Lockhart Vaughan Foundation focuses on supporting 501(c)(3) organizations in Baltimore, Maryland, with a commitment to education, environment, and community development. Established in 1990, the foundation aims to enhance public education access, promote environmental sustainability, and foster vibrant neighborhoods through strategic grant-making. Applicants must submit a contact information form before applying, with an upcoming deadline for summer learning grants on February 20. The foundation prioritizes impactful initiatives that align with its goals.

The Pattern Panhandle Wind Competitive Grant Program, administered by the Amarillo Area Foundation, supports nonprofit and charitable institutions serving Carson County. This initiative aims to enhance community quality of life through grants focused on civic engagement, disaster recovery, economic development, health initiatives, and educational support for students. Proposals are welcomed from organizations holding 501(c)(3) status, with priority given to those based in Carson County. This program fosters collaboration and growth, ensuring lasting benefits for local residents.

The Mt. Lebanon Community Foundation offers grants through the Mt. Lebanon Community Endowment, aimed at enhancing the community's character and quality of life. Established in 2002, it supports 501(c)(3) organizations and government agencies, focusing on youth, senior citizens, and community life. Grants are available for projects that benefit residents of Mt. Lebanon, PA, with an emphasis on sustainability, collaboration, and leaving a lasting legacy in the community.

The Boyd And Evelyn Mullen Charitable Foundation Grant aims to support various charitable organizations in Texas, primarily focusing on education, literary studies, science, and religion. With a commitment to improving the welfare of those in need, the foundation provides funding for college scholarships, disaster relief, and medical research, especially in nutrition. Grants typically range from $5,000 to $30,000, and the foundation emphasizes adapting to the evolving needs of the Houston community.

The Louis Padovano Grants, awarded by The Lotos Foundation, support not-for-profit organizations in New York City that provide free arts and science programs to middle and high school students. These grants aim to nurture talented individuals across diverse fields such as dance, film, music, theater, visual arts, writing, and the sciences. With over $750,000 allocated annually, it supports initiatives in youth development, community development, affordable housing, and environmental concerns. Established in 2018 with a foundation of $2 million, UniBank aims to fortify its commitment to community service. Organizations with proven success and collaboration efforts are encouraged to apply, ensuring timely funding decisions for impactful projects.

The PACCAR Foundation Grant supports organizations in communities with a significant PACCAR presence, such as factories and offices. Established in 1951, it primarily funds capital projects for social services, education, and cultural affairs. Recipients often include United Way and local universities. The foundation does not support fundraising events or individual scholarships, ensuring that funds are directed towards impactful community initiatives. Proposals must align with the foundation's mission to enhance community welfare.

The RAF Better Communities Grants focus on enhancing quality of life in the Rochester area through unrestricted funding for nonprofits. With a commitment to equity, these grants support historically marginalized communities and basic needs, promoting growth and resilience. Organizations can apply for funding between $10,000 and $20,000 annually, with a particular emphasis on operational support. This initiative aims to empower nonprofits and strengthen community infrastructure, ensuring sustained impact and collaboration.

The Catherine Vincent Deardorf Charitable Foundation Grant supports 501(c)3 organizations in Webster County, Iowa, emphasizing arts, education, and nature. Established in 1993, the foundation has allocated over $9 million to local projects. The grant prioritizes non-recurring initiatives that foster creativity and community collaboration. Applications are accepted six times a year, needing submission before the project's start. The foundation aims to enrich the community through innovative programs that benefit a diverse range of residents.

Community Foundation of Greater New Britain

Since 1941, the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain has been the area’s signature resource for those who, like us, aspire to make our community a better place.

The Foundation has been at the forefront of positive community change and charitable impact since The Stanley Works and New Britain Machine pooled $30,000 in gifts before World War II to begin what was then called the New Britain Foundation for Public Giving. Primarily a grant maker for many years, providing funding to support New Britain non-profits and their programs, our Foundation today is leading and collaborating to shape the Berlin, New Britain, Plainville and Southington of tomorrow.

Community Chest of New Britain and Berlin (CCNBB) Grant

The Community Chest of New Britain and Berlin has a long, proud history of serving our community. 

The Community Chest supports programs in the health and human service area and will consider requests for program grants, general operating support and seed grants for new programs. Generally, requests for capital equipment are not funded but may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Proposals will be evaluated with respect to available funding and the potential benefit of the project to the community.

Due to the challenging economic climate and recent cuts to federal funding, the Community Chest Board will prioritize programs that address the following basic needs until further notice:

• Mental Health
• Food
• Housing/Shelter
• General Health

Organizations serving children in regard to the priority areas above will receive additional consideration

The Hulston Family Foundation Grant supports initiatives aimed at enhancing health, education, and welfare for children and families, while addressing hunger and homelessness. The foundation prioritizes funding for organizations based in West Central and Southwest Missouri, with a focus on effective management and measurable community impact. Grants are capped at $25,000 and typically not extended beyond two consecutive years, ensuring a sustainable approach to funding community-based projects.

The Senate Bill 1 Sea Level Rise Tribal Cultural Resources Funding Program aims to support California Native American tribes in addressing the challenges posed by sea level rise (SLR). This initiative provides funding for tribes to assess and plan for the impacts on their ancestral lands and cultural resources, ensuring the preservation of their identities and practices. Eligible projects include community visioning, data collection, and the development of strategies to protect culturally significant sites threatened by SLR.

The MARC is offering the Water Quality Enhancement Development, Design, and Implementation Block Grant to support innovative water quality enhancement projects. This program aims to address statutory goals, including flood resiliency and recreational benefits, by funding project development and engineering design. With a total funding of $1,980,188 available, projects can fall under two categories: Project Development and Engineering Design. No local match is required, making this an accessible opportunity for eligible applicants.
