Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley

The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley is a collection of individual funds and resources given by local citizens to enhance and support the quality of life in the Fox River Valley of Illinois.

We are a tax-exempt public charity that allows individuals, businesses, and non-profit organizations to establish permanent endowments and temporary funds within the confines of one large foundation.

Foundation funds are used to provide grants to non-profit organizations and scholarships to area students. The Foundation also hosts a Youth Engagement in Philanthropy (YEP) program, which helps high school students learn more about philanthropy and empowers them to make a difference in the community.

The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley serves the City of Aurora, Kane County, and Kendall County within the State of Illinois.

Goldsmith Family Endowment Fund

The Goldsmith Family Endowment Fund provides scholarships to students who are graduates of East Aurora High School or West Aurora High School.

This fund, which was created in 2001, became an endowment in 2012.

The Goldsmith family has lived in Aurora for more than 100 years.

Zalmon Goldsmith, a long-time Aurora attorney, and Anne Goldsmith, his wife, were involved in numerous community activities throughout their lives.

Mr. Goldsmith served as a member and chairman of the board of Mercy Hospital and of the Heartland Blood Centers. He was also on the board of Sunnymere.

Mrs. Goldsmith was one of the founders of the Paramount Arts Centre Endowment and also served on the boards of the United Way and the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley, among others.

Mr. and Mrs. Goldsmith’s son Bruce has practiced law in Aurora for more than thirty years. Bruce’s wife Margot, a freelance editor, has served on the Aurora Public Library Board of Directors.

Service One Credit Union offers a Teacher Grant program providing 12 grants of $250 each for K-12 teachers who are members or family members of members. The initiative aims to support classroom supply needs, reflecting the credit union's commitment to community engagement and educational support. Applications open annually from August 15 to September 30, with notifications sent by October 15. This program exemplifies Service One's dedication to enhancing educational resources for local teachers.

Scholarship Eligibility

• Graduating high school senior from any Palm Beach County high school
• Open to students pursuing a non-traditional technical education. Preference to students studying auto mechanics
• Demonstrate financial need

The Vitality Grants: Arts Education program by the Rochester Area Community Foundation aims to enhance equitable access to arts education for PreK-12 students in the region. The Stuntz Mycology Fund offers Mini Grants to support mycological research and education in the Pacific Northwest. Grants, up to $250, are available for K-12 teachers, educators, and students for projects involving fungi, including workshops and science fairs. The Writer in Residence Grant, offered by the Idaho Commission on the Arts, is a prestigious biennial award recognizing literary excellence among Idaho writers. This grant not only provides financial support but also encourages engagement with the community through workshops and readings. Applicants must be practicing writers, at least 18 years old, and Idaho residents for one year prior to applying. The grant aims to foster literary appreciation and support arts jobs across the state.

Iowa Registered Apprenticeship Development Program (84F)

Supports newly established RA programs in high-demand fields.

The Iowa Registered Apprenticeship Development Program (84F) specifically provides funding for sponsors who create a new RA program in an eligible high-demand occupation or add a high-demand occupation to their existing program.

Fran Gay Memorial Scholarship Fund

When Fran died in 2000, she left behind not only her son, daughter, and other family members, but also her second “family” at JFK Medical Center. She worked at the hospital for 30 years in positions that included supervisor of Emergency Room, Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit and as Assistant Director of Nursing, and Risk Manager. Her family established this scholarship to help students pursue careers in the health profession.

The Southern SARE: Professional Development Grants support educational initiatives for agricultural professionals, enhancing outreach and training efforts directly benefiting farmers and ranchers. These grants fund diverse training activities, including workshops and farm tours, aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture through effective participatory methods. Projects are encouraged to involve multi-disciplinary partnerships and the participation of land-grant institutions, ensuring a comprehensive approach to agricultural education. Priority is given to projects with budgets under $80,000, fostering a broad array of impactful initiatives.

The Southern SARE: On-Farm Research Grant supports agricultural professionals in collaborating with farmers to conduct innovative on-farm research projects focused on sustainable agriculture. This initiative emphasizes building strong relationships between researchers and farmers while addressing agricultural production challenges. By fostering new practices in production and marketing, it aims to enhance sustainability in the agricultural sector, thereby benefiting local communities and the environment.

The LATLC Youth Sports Sponsorship Program, initiated by the Los Angeles Trial Lawyers’ Charities in 2014, aims to support youth sports leagues and public school athletic programs in Los Angeles County. With over $186,700 granted to more than 125 groups, the program helps cover expenses such as equipment and team clothing, promoting inclusivity in sports. LATLC only accepts applications from leagues and public schools, ensuring a focused impact on community sports initiatives.

The NatureWorks Grant provides up to 75% reimbursement for local government entities in Ohio to acquire, develop, and rehabilitate recreational areas. Funded by the Ohio Parks and Natural Resources Bond Issue since 1993, it has supported over 2300 public park projects across all 88 counties. Eligible applicants include townships, villages, cities, counties, park districts, and conservancy districts, ensuring enhanced access to recreational spaces for communities throughout Ohio.

EPSCoR RII Research Fellows Limited Competition

EPSCoR RII: EPSCoR Research Fellows directly aligns with the NSF EPSCoR strategic goal of establishing sustainable Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) professional development pathways that advance workforce development and effects engagement in STEM at national and global levels. EPSCoR RII: EPSCoR Research Fellows provides awards to build research capacity in institutions and transform the career trajectories of investigators and further develop their individual research potential through collaborations with investigators from the nation's premier private, governmental, or academic research institutions and/or centers. The fellowship provides opportunities to establish strong collaborations through extended or periodic collaborative visits to a selected host site. Through collaborative research activities with the host site, Fellows will be able to learn new techniques, develop new collaborations, advance existing partnerships, benefit from access to unique equipment and facilities, and/or shift their research toward potentially transformative new directions. The experiences gained through the fellowships are intended to have lasting impacts that will enhance the Fellows' research trajectories well beyond the award period. The benefits to the Fellows are also expected to improve the research capacity of their institutions and jurisdictions more broadly.

Phillip D. O’Connell, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund

About the Fund

Born in Macon, Georgia in 1907, Phillip earned his law degree from the University of Florida. He opened a law office in West Palm Beach in June 1931. The following year he was elected West Palm Beach municipal judge, and four years later was elected assistant state attorney for Palm Beach and Broward counties. In 1939, he became state attorney, where for more than two decades he helped to shape the history of Palm Beach County. Throughout his career, Phillip always took the time to dedicate himself to his community by being a participant and benefactor to numerous charitable, religious, professional and civic organizations, including being a founding director of Flagler National Bank.

The Area Education Grants program, initiated by the Foundation for the Tri-State Community in 1983, empowers teachers in Boyd and Greenup Counties to enhance student learning through innovative projects. By providing financial resources, this initiative encourages creativity beyond the standard curriculum. Teachers can submit project proposals for funding, enabling them to engage students effectively. The program not only supports educational advancement but also fosters community involvement in the educational process.

Brian Farnham Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund, created in 1995 to honor the life of Brian Farnham, was established as an endowment in 2005.

Brian Farnham (1977-1993) attended Our Lady of Good Counsel School until the eighth grade.

He participated in Cub Scouts at the school and was an avid basketball and football player.

He then attended Newark High School and represented the school at a downstate academic contest as a member of the JET’s Team.

He was named an All-American Scholar and was admitted into membership in the Who’s Who of American High School Scholars.

Brian died on June 5, 1993 in an automobile accident.

This fund provides scholarships to students entering “people-oriented” vocations such as the social sciences, health science, medicine, engineering, music and theology.

Carl E. & Marilyn J. Hess Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund

The Carl E. & Marilyn J. Hess Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund provides scholarships to graduates of Aurora Central, Marmion Academy, and Rosary High School. Carl Hess (1927-2014) was born in Aurora. He was a graduate of St. Nicholas Grade School and Marmion Military Academy. Mr. Hess served in the United States Navy at the end of World War II and during the Korean War. After retiring from the plastering trade, he enjoyed refinishing furniture. In addition, Mr. Hess played softball in Aurora for many years. Marilyn Hess (1930-2020) also was born in Aurora. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Grade School and East Aurora High School. Mrs. Hess was a homemaker and an artist. Mr. and Mrs. Hess were married for sixty-one years.
