RSF's Visiting Researchers Program

Russell Sage Foundation
Private
New York
Unspecified amount in in-kind support

Russell Sage Foundation

One of the oldest American foundations, the Russell Sage Foundation, was established by Mrs. Margaret Olivia Sage in 1907 for “the improvement of social and living conditions in the United States.” In its early years, the foundation undertook major projects in low-income housing, urban planning, social work, and labor reform. The foundation now dedicates itself to strengthening the methods, data, and theories of the social sciences to diagnose social problems and improve social policies. It also funds researchers at other institutions and supports programs intended to develop new generations of social scientists.

What We Do

The Russell Sage Foundation is an operating foundation directly involved in the conduct and dissemination of social science research. In its effort to improve the social effectiveness of social research, the foundation

  • Invites individual scholars and collaborative groups working in areas of foundation interest to participate in the foundation’s Visiting Scholar Program to pursue their research and writing projects;
  • Provides support for scholars at other institutions to pursue research projects that advance the Foundation’s research programs;
  • Ensures widespread access to the research that the foundation supports through its own book and journal publishing program;
  • Sponsors special seminars and working groups aimed at developing new topics in social science;
  • Participates in the planning of each study or program as an active partner and reserves the right to publish any resulting manuscripts;
  • Collaborates with other foundations, granting agencies and academic institutions in studies of social problems.

Visiting Researchers Program

On an occasional basis, the Foundation has one or two available office spaces and considers applications for short-term residential fellowships from scholars who are conducting research relevant to the Foundation’s priority areas. These positions do not come with any Foundation financial support and are available for visits up to five months, between September 1 and June 30, as space permits. In rare circumstances, visits up to ten months may be considered.

Visiting Researchers are provided with an office at the foundation, a computer and software, access to research materials including online journals and databases.

The Visiting Researcher award does not provide any salary or other financial support. Visiting Researchers who reside outside the greater New York City area are provided with a partially subsidized apartment near the Foundation offices if available.

Proposals should outline the basics of the project to be carried out while in residence, how the project is relevant to RSF's program areas, how the residency and interactions with the Foundation's Visiting Scholars and staff would be beneficial to the project, and the expected outcome of the work. The letter should also specify the time period for which the applicant would like to be in residence.

Research Priorities

RSF supports high-quality innovative research under four core research priorities:

  • Behavioral Science and Decision Making in Context;
  • Future of Work;
  • Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration; and
  • Social, Political, and Economic Inequality.

In addition, it supports research under the following time-limited co-funded research priorities:

  • Immigration and Immigrant Integration;
  • Implications of the 2023 Supreme Court Decision to Ban Race-Conscious Admissions at Colleges and Universities for Educational Attainment and Economic Mobility; and
  • Causal Research on the Criminal Justice System.

Visiting Researcher programs consider investigator-initiated projects across all RSF research priorities.

Grant Guidelines

To advance its mission to build a responsible and equitable technology ecosystem, the Kapor Foundation makes strategic grants across three focus areas: (1) Computing Education, (2) Innovation, and (3) Governance.

Within each focus area, we fund research on critical topics at the intersection of racial equity and tech, capacity-building that strengthens coalitions and movement-building infrastructure, and policy advocacy that drives systemic change.

Funding Priorities

We fund organizations and initiatives aligned with our core focus areas:

Given advances in Al, a new vision of education is urgently needed — one that ensures students are equipped with the technical skills to build emerging technologies and the critical skills to navigate their socio-technical implications. We fund computing education initiatives across K-12, postsecondary, and alternative pathways that expand computing participation at scale, shift policy to ensure equitable access, and expand the pipeline of educators prepared to teach computing.

2.

Al is being designed, developed, and deployed rapidly, yet the communities most affected by its impacts are largely excluded from its creation and subsequent economic benefits. We support organizations and individuals that build responsible Al technologies, leverage technology to close gaps in access and opportunity, and invest in initiatives and coalitions that advance responsible Al in the entrepreneurship and venture capital ecosystems.

3.

As Al adoption accelerates, bolder approaches to regulation are necessary to protect marginalized communities from technological harm, expand economic opportunity, and ensure the benefits of technology reach everyone. We support efforts that build awareness of key policy issues, develop policy agendas, and mobilize coalitions.

For 2026, our priority advocacy areas are: 1) computing education, 2) algorithmic bias, 3) Al safeguards for children, 4) data center development, and 5) surveillance and civil rights.

Some examples of projects using EPF money are:

  • Purchasing land for the NYS Forest Preserve
  • Restoring historic sites
  • Conserving farmland
  • Restoring habitat
  • Controlling invasive species
  • Upgrading municipal sewage treatment plants
  • Cleaning up waterfront property and creating a public park
  • Helping business develop ways to recycle material

The EPF also supports the stewardship of public lands, including state parks and millions of acres of public lands throughout the state. Through partnerships with volunteer organizations, state agencies use stewardship funding to manage trails and lands, protect natural resources, preserve wildlife habitats, make critical capital improvements at parks and campgrounds, educate students about conservation and provide access to persons with disabilities.

FAST-NY

Empire State Development
State/Local Government
New York
Up to US $500,000

About Us

The mission of Empire State Development (“ESD”) is to promote a vigorous, inclusive and growing state economy, encourage business investment and job creation, and support diverse, local economies across New York State through the efficient use of loans, grants, tax credits, real estate development, marketing, and other forms of assistance.

FAST-NY

Under New York’s FAST NY Shovel-Ready Grant Program, Empire State Development will provide up to $400 million in grants to prepare and develop sites statewide to jumpstart New York’s shovel-readiness and increase its attractiveness to large employers, including high-tech manufacturing, particularly semiconductor manufacturing, interstate distribution and logistics businesses. The program will help diversify New York State’s economy while propelling new investments for businesses, communities and job creation.

Overview

Under the Program, ESD provides grants for pre-development activities and infrastructure investments to develop sites that will attract many eligible industries —including, but need not be limited to, high-tech manufacturing, clean-tech renewable energy, life sciences, agribusiness, optics, transportation equipment, materials processing, industrial machinery manufacturing and other advanced manufacturing. These sites can also be used for interstate distribution and logistics. However, ESD may give priority to semiconductor manufacturing projects and related industry and supply chain projects. The Program further provides ESD the ability to award a “FAST NY Shovel-Ready Certification,” for sites that meet high standards of shovel readiness, to support and enhance their marketing efforts to attract many more industries.

Track A - FAST NY Shovel-Ready Certification

  • This no-cost designation by ESD for site-marketing purposes establishes that the applicant has worked proactively with New York State (the “State”) to address all major permitting issues prior to a business expressing interest in the location.

Track B - FAST NY Pre-Development Grants

  • Working capital grants of up to $500,000 per site will be awarded to fund the cost of necessary pre-development site planning and reviews for future shovel-ready sites.
  • Grants will fund necessary costs to assist grantees in completing pre-development activities, such as those required for FAST NY Shovel-Ready Certification.

Track C - FAST NY Infrastructure Improvements

  • Capital grants will be awarded to improve the shovel-readiness of existing, mature sites by funding infrastructure improvements such as water, sewer, transportation, electricity, gas and other capital-eligible site improvement costs.
  • Competitive grant awards will be available to sites that have substantially met the requirements of FAST NY Shovel-Ready certification.
