Hudson River Valley Greenway

Established in 1991, the Hudson River Valley Greenway works to celebrate preserve and enhance the Hudson River Valley through regional planning, natural and cultural resource protection, heritage and environmental education, economic development, and public access.

McHenry Community Planning Grants

The Hudson River Valley Greenway works to celebrate and protect the region’s ecological, scenic, cultural, historic, agricultural, and recreational treasures.

HRVG’s McHenry Community Planning Grant Program provides financial assistance for local and regional planning projects in the Greenway Area. To be considered for a Greenway Community Grant or a Compact Community Grant, projects must incorporate Greenway Criteria – Natural and Cultural Resource Protection, Regional Planning, Economic Development, Public Access to the Hudson River, Heritage and Environmental Education.

In 2025, the program was renamed in honor of Hudson River Valley Greenway Communities Council Founding Chairman Barnabas McHenry. 

Greenway Communities

Municipalities located within the Greenway Area can become a Greenway Communities. This includes most municipalities in the counties that surround the Hudson River from New York County to Washington and Saratoga Counties.

To become a Greenway Community, a municipality must adopt a resolution committing to HRVG’s resource protection, regional planning, economic development, public access, and education criteria. After the resolution is adopted, municipalities can access funding for municipal and intermunicipal projects.  

Compact Communities

All counties located within the Greenway Area can become Compact Counties. Currently, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, and Dutchess are the only Compact Counties. However, counties as far north as Washington County can join by adopting a Compact Plan - a regional strategy that identifies how a county will integrate Greenway Criteria into its planning work.

To become a Compact Community, a municipality must adopt its county’s plan. After the plan is adopted, municipalities can access higher levels of funding for municipal and intermunicipal projects. 

Greenway Community Grant: Inter-Municipal Projects

The Hudson River Valley Greenway’s Greenway Community Grant promotes the economic development of designated Greenway Communities while respecting local decision making. Planning projects funded through this program preserve, enhance, and develop the scenic, natural, historic, cultural, and recreational resources in the Hudson River Valley.

Greenway Communities can apply for Greenway Community Grants up to $45,000 for intermunicipal projects. To be considered for a Greenway Community Grant, applicants should incorporate the Greenway Criteria.

Eligible projects include, but are not limited to:

• Comprehensive or master planning
• Zoning and subdivision ordinance updates
• Natural resource inventories and protection plans
• Open space inventories and conservation strategies
• Cultural and historic resource planning initiatives
• Waterfront revitalization planning along the Hudson River and its tributaries

The PLTW Launch program, in collaboration with Burns and McDonnell, aims to enhance STEM education by expanding access to innovative educational modules in eligible schools. This initiative supports public and charter schools in targeted counties, focusing on increasing student engagement in STEM fields. Through grant funding, participating schools can introduce new PLTW Launch modules and provide essential training for teachers, fostering a richer learning environment to prepare students for future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Impact 100 NYC is dedicated to transforming communities through collective giving, providing $100,000 grants annually to local nonprofits in New York City. By focusing on innovative projects that serve underserved populations, they aim to address unmet needs and promote social change. Eligible organizations must be 501(c)(3) public charities, operate within NYC, and meet specific budgetary requirements. The initiative not only empowers local nonprofits but also raises awareness of lesser-known impactful programs.

The Emerging Leaders Program by NYFA offers a year-long professional development opportunity for manager-level arts administrators in NYC. This program enhances leadership skills through workshops, peer-learning pods, and intensive retreats. Participants will engage in strategic career planning and receive support from experienced alumni. The program aims to empower arts leaders and is supported by The Willem de Kooning Foundation. It's open to those committed to their professional growth within the arts community.

The Neighborhood Builders Program, supported by Bank of America, empowers 501(c)(3) nonprofits through a two-year leadership development initiative. Participants receive funding, training, and networking opportunities to enhance their impact in communities. Since its inception, the program has invested over $346 million, training more than 4,000 leaders. The initiative focuses on advancing social mobility and economic opportunities, ensuring affordable housing, and fostering resilient communities. This program is vital for nonprofits aiming to strengthen their leadership and community engagement.

The Ponce De Leon Foundation Grant supports community projects aiming to address economic and social challenges in core areas such as affordable housing, healthcare, and education. Established by Ponce Bank, a certified Minority Depository Institution, the Foundation prioritizes proposals from registered non-profit organizations to enhance local development and assist underserved communities in New York City. This initiative reflects a commitment to equitable access to resources and services for individuals and groups in need.

The Harry S. Black & Allon Fuller Fund Grant, established in 1930, aims to enhance healthcare access and human services for underserved populations in New York City and Chicago. It supports initiatives in health education and policy advocacy, particularly for low-income communities. The fund also prioritizes programs for individuals with physical disabilities. However, it does not fund projects focused on medical research or mental health services, nor does it consider requests for endowment campaigns or capital projects.

The NRA Foundation State Fund Grant in New York supports initiatives that enhance firearms education, promote safety in shooting sports, and encourage responsible firearms use. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) organizations, government entities, and state-recognized nonprofits. The grant aims to provide financial assistance for projects that align with the Foundation's mission and foster public benefit. Organizations not recognized as nonprofits or governmental agencies must demonstrate equivalent public benefit to qualify for funding.

The PLTW Engineering program, in partnership with Burns and McDonnell, aims to enhance STEM education by providing grants to public and charter schools in specific counties. This initiative empowers students to engage with real-world challenges through hands-on learning experiences. Eligible schools must offer PLTW Engineering courses, ensuring access to quality education for students from diverse backgrounds. With a total grant of $40,000 over two years, this program seeks to inspire the next generation of engineers and innovators.

The PLTW Computer Science program, supported by Burns and McDonnell, aims to enhance STEM education in various communities by funding schools to implement PLTW courses. This partnership promotes student engagement with real-world challenges, preparing them for future careers in technology. With a total grant of $20,000, schools must offer multiple PLTW courses over two years, ensuring access to quality education for underserved populations.

The Samuels Foundation's Healthy Aging Grant Program aims to enhance the health and quality of life for elderly residents in New York City. It supports innovative patient-based services that improve access to care, promote measurable quality changes, and address the needs of underserved populations. The Foundation prioritizes sustainable programs that continue to thrive post-funding, ensuring long-term positive impacts on the aging community through effective healthcare delivery and support services.

The Samuels Foundation: Performing Arts Grant supports New York City's not-for-profit performing arts organizations, focusing on high-quality productions in dance, music, opera, and theatre. With a commitment to both established and emerging groups, this grant aims to enhance the cultural landscape while maintaining an open-door policy for new applicants. Organizations may apply once a year, and while general operating support is prioritized, proposals for creative projects are also welcomed. Note that funding is limited, and not all applications will be successful.

Burns and McDonnell, a 100% employee-owned firm, partners with Project Lead The Way (PLTW) to enhance access to STEM education. By expanding PLTW Computer Science programs in local schools, they aim to engage students in real-world challenges and equip them with essential skills. Eligible schools must be located in specific counties and serve a majority of students from low-income backgrounds. This initiative supports the growth of STEM education, fostering a brighter future for communities through enhanced learning opportunities.

The PLTW Gateway program, in collaboration with Burns & McDonnell, aims to enhance STEM education by expanding access to Project Lead The Way initiatives in eligible communities. By providing grants for program expansion, the initiative encourages schools to implement new PLTW units and train teachers, empowering students with essential skills for future careers. This partnership seeks to inspire a new generation of learners through hands-on, real-world challenges, thereby fostering greater participation in STEM fields across various regions.

The Nonprofit Resource Training Grant offers up to $1,000 for tax-exempt organizations to send employees to essential training and conferences. This initiative supports community-based groups that serve low- to moderate-income populations and align with The Ready Commitment. By enhancing employee skills, the grant aims to strengthen nonprofits and their impact in the community, ensuring they provide valuable services effectively.

The Investors Foundation Grant aims to create positive, lasting impacts in communities through support for arts, education, health and human services, youth programs, and affordable housing. With over $40 million awarded since 2005, the Foundation aligns its efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on key areas such as poverty alleviation and quality education. Organizations eligible for grants must be 501(c)(3) compliant and serve specific communities in New Jersey and New York.

The PLTW Gateway program, in partnership with Burns and McDonnell, aims to enhance STEM education by supporting schools in eligible counties to implement PLTW Gateway units. With a total grant of $20,000, schools are encouraged to offer at least one unit per academic year, fostering real-world skills and engagement in STEM fields. This initiative seeks to increase access and participation in high-quality STEM learning experiences, ultimately preparing students for future careers.

The Stella and Charles Guttman Foundation Grant supports programs for low-income infants, toddlers, and preschoolers transitioning to kindergarten, emphasizing quality improvement and service expansion in high-need neighborhoods. The Foundation aims to build a robust network of education, health, and social services for children from birth through college. With an annual grant budget of approximately $2 million, it prioritizes local organizations in New York City while focusing on high-poverty areas and community-driven strategies.

The Cleveland H. Dodge Foundation Grant supports organizations in New York City that focus on education and service delivery to underserved communities. It offers capacity-building grants, results-based educational programs, professional development for teachers, and innovative digital education solutions. The Foundation prioritizes after-school and out-of-school programs, while maintaining a commitment to support only those with a long-standing relationship with the Foundation. Organizations must have a 501(c)(3) status to be eligible.

The Booth Ferris Foundation offers grants to arts and culture organizations in New York City, aiming to enhance the city's cultural vibrancy. The Foundation prioritizes organizations that demonstrate artistic excellence, engage diverse audiences, and maintain robust fiscal health with budgets over $1 million. Support is available for capacity building and capital projects, with an emphasis on sustainability and measurable outcomes. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) public charities. The application deadline is February 1.

The Hudson River Estuary Program - River Education grant offers approximately $300,000 to support projects enhancing education about the estuary. Eligible applicants include governmental and non-profit organizations within New York State. The program aims to improve climate resilience and environmental education while ensuring accessibility for diverse communities. Grant awards range from $20,000 to $100,000, with a focus on projects that foster learning about the Hudson River Estuary and its resources.

The Housing for Everyone Grant Competition, part of the 2026 Initiative, aims to support eviction prevention in low-to moderate-income communities. This 20th annual initiative recognizes the destabilizing impact of eviction and displacement on families, which leads to job loss, school disruptions, and health issues. By funding innovative organizations, the competition seeks to provide stability for renters, enabling them to stay in their homes and communities.

The Howard Gilman Foundation supports a diverse range of performing arts organizations in New York City, emphasizing equitable access to the arts. With a mission to transform lives through artistic expression, the Foundation provides general operating support grants, fostering long-term partnerships. They prioritize organizations reflective of New York's cultural community, focusing on those led by people of color or located in underserved neighborhoods. This commitment helps ensure a vibrant and inclusive arts ecosystem for all.

The Art of Science program at the New York Botanical Garden invites educators to explore the intersection of art and nature. This course, supported by the CGC scholarship, covers all associated fees, making it accessible for teachers looking to enrich their students' outdoor learning experiences.

The Plant, Learn and Grow! School Gardening 201 program, offered by The City Garden Clubs of New York, equips classroom teachers with practical strategies to enhance student learning through garden projects. This scholarship covers course fees, ensuring that educators can integrate gardening into their curriculum effectively.
