Treetops Grants Program

The NYC Green Fund Treetops Grant Program provides funding for organizations with annual operating budgets between $175,000 and $2.5 million that program, steward, and advocate for parks and open spaces across NYC’s five boroughs. Treetops supports a range of projects, including open space stewardship, environmental action, organizational development, health and wellness, youth engagement, arts and culture, and urban tree care and planting.

Organizations may be awarded one- or two-year grants of up to $50,000 annually. New projects selected in 2024 received an average grant award of $15,818, and the largest grant awarded was $35,000. The Long Island Aquaculture Infrastructure Grants aim to enhance aquaculture operations by providing funding for equipment and infrastructure projects. Administered by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, the program offers two funding rounds: Round 1 for equipment on a rolling basis and Round 2 for infrastructure through a single proposal process. This initiative supports the long-term viability of the marine economy and encourages growth in New York's aquaculture sector.

Eligible artists must identify as being of transgender experience and Black, Indigenous, and/or a person of color, and we strongly encourage artists who also identify as disabled, LGBTQ+, and/or undocumented to apply. Projects should be in the development stage and can be fiction or nonfiction, including features or shorts. The applicant should be the main writer and/or director on the project and should identify as “emerging,” which Sundance Institute defines as yet to complete a long-form or major work in the specific discipline in question. 

Two artists will be selected from Minnesota or New York City.

The Thriving Communities Grants support arts and culture projects that promote diversity, enhance public engagement, and foster historic preservation in New York City. Targeting underrepresented artists and smaller-budget organizations, these grants aim to build capacity and improve access to arts education. Eligible projects include collaborations that integrate arts into public schools and initiatives that strengthen advocacy for the arts. The program prioritizes funding for projects in non-Manhattan areas and communities of color.

The Sustainability Project Grant by the DOE Office of Sustainability supports NYC Public Schools in implementing impactful sustainability projects. Schools can apply for funding up to $5,000 for initiatives that enhance environmental education, create gardens, or promote climate action. The grant aims to empower diverse school communities and foster climate literacy, ultimately contributing to healthier environments and social equity. Priority is given to schools with higher economic need and those that haven't received funding previously.

The Promising Futures Grants focus on enhancing job training and placement for young people in New York City. This initiative ultimately seeks to empower job seekers and improve overall economic opportunities in the community.

The Emily Davie and Joseph S. Kornfeld Foundation Grant supports innovative organizations focused on civic engagement and arts education. With over 40 years of commitment, the foundation provides flexible funding to empower marginalized communities. Creative & Performing Arts

The Pincus Family Foundation’s Creative and Performing Arts portfolio supports programs where young people use art as a tool to address the structural inequities they face. Five strategic priorities:

Education

High school readiness for many low-income students, largely is a result of poor preparation in middle school. PFF is funding programs/projects that support middle school engagement and focus on achievement filling a funding gap. 

Target Constituency: We support non-profit organizations serving middle school students who face gaps in comprehensive high school readiness. These organizations implement innovative programming that creates challenging yet nurturing environments—preparing students for achievement while inspiring them to become engaged, confident citizens ready to contribute to their communities.

Health & Wellness

Goal: Advance children’s health and well-being by supporting nonprofits that strengthen social conditions, empower youth, and build healthier environments in marginalized communities.

Target Constituency: Nonprofits whose work strengthens social determinants of health for children in marginalized communities.

Play & Recreation

Goal: Advance children’s social-emotional development and physical well-being by supporting nonprofits that create inclusive play-based programming, competitive sports opportunities, and outdoor recreational experiences in under-resourced communities.

Target Constituency: Non-profits whose work promotes access to quality recreational programming for children ages 6-18 in under-resourced communities.

For all grants, the organization’s mission and scope must align with the Foundation’s mission. For the latter, these grants can be either unrestricted or restricted to a particular program or project. The type of grant and what it is used for will dictate the goals and objectives to be met.

The Healthy Lives: Animal Welfare Grant Program, funded by The New York Community Trust, aims to enhance the humane treatment and medical care of animals in metropolitan New York. This initiative supports nonprofits that align with its grantmaking priorities, fostering projects that focus on animal welfare. 501(c)(3) nonprofits serving low-income communities in Queens County, New York can receive US $1,000,000 in unrestricted, multi-year support for community development, housing, economic opportunity, or workforce programs. Citi Foundation provides Queens County organizations with funding plus technical assistance and peer learning to advance affordable housing, economic development, financial health, and workforce readiness initiatives.

The Citi Foundation's Global Innovation Challenge invites proposals from community organizations worldwide developing innovative employment solutions for low-income youth aged 15 to 24. This initiative aims to enhance youth employability, addressing global unemployment challenges faced by millions. Eligible organizations can apply for funding to support programs such as vocational training, entrepreneurship, and financial education to empower young people. The deadline for application registration is March 4, 2025, at 12 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Lily Auchincloss Foundation offers Environmental Grants to 501(c)3 organizations in New York City's five boroughs. This funding cycle focuses on projects related to the preservation of local history, parks, gardens, and environmental education. Eligible organizations must have an IRS determination letter and can only apply once per year. The foundation does not support individuals or certain types of institutions, ensuring that grants are used to enhance community life in NYC.

The New York Community Trust's Education Grantmaking program aims to enhance opportunities for underserved students in NYC's public schools. It supports projects that promote systemic reforms, equity, and safe learning environments. Key areas include improving academic outcomes, increasing access to high-level coursework, and ensuring emotional and social support for students. Priority is given to initiatives that foster culturally inclusive curricula and advocate for policies benefiting all students, particularly those historically underserved.
