• Promoting community awareness and involvement; and/or
• Developing Emergency Response Plans and Procedures.

Eligible applicants for SWP Grants are community water systems (CWS), a group of adjacent CWS, specifically using surface water influenced groundwater sources, or a not-for-profit contractor working on behalf of a CWS. A CWS is defined by West Virginia Legislative Rule for Public Water Systems (§64-3-3.4) as “a public water system which serves at least fifteen (15) service connections used by year-round residents or regularly serves at least twenty-five (25) year-round residents

The Buckner Woodford Clay, III Memorial Fund, established by Dr. Thomas W. State Development Grant

State Development Grant Program is for brick-and-mortar preservation projects. Properties must be individually listed on or a contributing property in a historic district or/and archaeological development of a site listed on the National Register of Historic Places to be eligible for this funding. The funding source for this grant program is appropriated by the WV Legislature, through Lottery Funds.

Funding is given to projects related to at least one of the following work categories:

• Work to sustain the existing form, integrity, and materials of a historic property.
• Measures to defend or guard the physical condition of a property from deterioration, loss or attack, or to cover or shield the site from further danger or injury.
• Repair and alteration of a property that make it compatible for modern use, while also preserving the features that convey its historical, cultural, and architectural value. This also includes work necessary to facilitate putting the building to an appropriate use, including meeting all codes and accessibility standards.
• Work that accurately depicts the form, features, and character of a property as it appeared at a particular period of time.
• Measures to reestablish the physical stability of a deteriorated historic property

Matching Requirement

Development Grants require a match budgeted on one-to-one (50/50) basis. Matching funds may include in-kind contributions but at least half of the sponsor’s matching funds must be cash. Only non-federal monies may be used as sources of cash. Grants are paid as reimbursement, so all grant expenditures and match resources must be expended for services completed (and approved) during the project period. 

The Ethnic Minorities and Women’s Internship Grant supports entry-level athletics administrative positions for one academic year, promoting diversity in NCAA Division II. It provides $30,000 for intern salaries and $3,000 for professional development, benefiting six schools annually from a total budget of $180,000. Eligible applicants must be active NCAA members, with a focus on enhancing ethnic minority and gender representation in athletics administration. The XENO PRIZE for Performance Arts, awarded by Franklin Furnace, supports early-career LGBTQ+-identifying performance artists creating new work in 26 states with restrictive gender-affirming laws. This annual prize, established in 2023, offers $5000 to a selected recipient from proposals submitted for the Franklin Furnace FUND for Performance Art. The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2025, encouraging innovative voices in the contemporary performance art landscape.

What does this program do?

It provides loans and grants to Microenterprise Development Organizations (MDOs) to:

• To help microenterprises startup and growth through a Rural Microloan Revolving Fund.
• Provide training and technical assistance to microloan borrowers and micro entrepreneurs.

Microenterprise Development Organizations must demonstrate experience in managing a Revolving Loan Fund, or:

• Certify that it or its employees have received education and training from a qualified microenterprise development training entity so that the applicant has the capacity to manage such a revolving loan fund.
• Demonstrate that it is actively and successfully participating as an intermediary lender in good standing under the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Microloan Program or other similar loan programs as determined by the Administrator.

 What kind of funding is available?

• Grants are available to provide technical assistance to rural micro-entrepreneurs or microenterprises, up to $205,000 annually.
  • Funding at the requested level is not guaranteed, and at least 15 percent matching funds are required.

• Loans of $50,000 to $500,000 may be used for establishing a Rural Microloan Revolving Fund managed by the Microenterprise Development Organization.
  • Total aggregate debt is capped at $2.5 million.

What are the loan terms?

• Maximum term is 20 years.
• Two-year payment deferral.
• Must establish a loan loss reserve fund.

What terms are required on loans to ultimate recipients?

• Up to $50,000.
• Fixed interest rate.
• Limited to 75 percent of project cost.

How may the funds be used?

Microlenders may make microloans for qualified business activities and expenses including, but not limited to:

• Working capital.
• Debt refinancing.
• Purchasing equipment and supplies.
• Improving real estate.

Frontier Statehood Preservation Fund

In honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia announces $500,000 in special grant funding through the Frontier to Statehood Preservation Fund. This historic preservation grant program is dedicated to the rehabilitation and adaptive or continued use of certified historic buildings constructed as of 1871 – when, in a case called Virginia v. West Virginia (1871), the U.S. Supreme Court recognized the legitimacy of the creation of the state of West Virginia in 1863.

Grant funds will support up to ten grant awards for the preservation and restoration of buildings that tell the story of colonial settlement in the Appalachian Mountains, the American Revolution, and the road to statehood, with a focus on creating, advancing, and/or sustaining service/amenity providers and cultural heritage tourism destinations in West Virginia. All properties must be individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places or included as a contributing structure in a National Register Historic District. Grant funding is made possible through the Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant via the National Park Service, United States Department of the Interior.

This is a competitive grant program open to members of the public. 

The Washington Biologists' Field Club (WBFC) Research Awards Competition offers grants to support field research focused on the Mid-Atlantic Region's natural history. This includes studies on biodiversity, ecology, and conservation, with a particular emphasis on organisms from Plummers Island and the Potomac River. The WBFC encourages proposals that enhance understanding of lesser-known taxa and has funded diverse research topics, such as fish behavior and conservation genetics.

The Extension Risk Management Education (ERME) Competitive Grants program aims to enhance the economic viability of agricultural producers through targeted risk management education. Funded by the University of Delaware, this initiative offers grants of up to $75,000 for projects addressing production, marketing, financial, legal, or human risks. The grants are expected to support 12-15 new projects over an 18-month duration, from April 2026 to September 2027, subject to funding availability and application quality.

The Extension Risk Management Education (ERME) Competitive Grants: Exploratory Projects aim to enhance agricultural producers' economic viability through innovative risk management education. Funded by the University of Delaware, these grants offer up to $10,000 for projects that address emerging risk topics or support producer workshops. With an 18-month duration from April 2026 to September 2027, this initiative encourages the development of new educational approaches to better serve the needs of farmers and ranchers.

The Extension Risk Management Education (ERME) Competitive Grants focus on underutilization of crop insurance projects to enhance agricultural producers' economic viability. This initiative, backed by the Northeast ERME Center and others, provides funding to deliver education in various risk management areas. Grants up to $100,000 are available for projects running from April 2026 to September 2027, with plans to support 7-10 new projects based on quality applications and funding availability.

Raleigh County high school graduates pursuing early childhood education at a West Virginia college or university can receive renewable scholarship support based on both need and merit. Beckley Area Foundation manages this scholarship through its universal application, helping local students access higher education opportunities in the state.

Nature's Path's Gardens for Good program empowers communities by funding organic gardens that address food insecurity. Since 2010, it has donated $930,000 CAD to support 120 gardens. In 2023, grants of $6,500 each will be awarded to 20 gardens across the U.S. and Canada. Eligible applicants must be registered non-profits with urban organic agriculture projects that serve low-income communities, promoting sustainable practices and inclusivity.

The Central Appalachia Living Traditions grants from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation support community projects in designated Appalachian counties. With funding ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, these grants aim to enhance public understanding and appreciation of folk and traditional arts. Ideal projects include workshops, public art, performances, and educational initiatives that foster multi-generational participation, particularly in under-resourced communities. Applications should focus on new or expanded programming that diversifies cultural activities.

The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) in West Virginia, managed by the USDA's NRCS, offers vital technical and financial assistance to farmers and forest landowners. This program encompasses various conservation practices aimed at enhancing water quality, soil health, and wildlife habitats. Applications are accepted year-round, and funding is allocated based on local resource priorities. Eligible participants include agricultural producers, non-industrial private forestland owners, and water management entities.

Need-based students graduating from a Raleigh County, West Virginia high school and attending an in-state accredited college or university can receive renewable scholarship support for higher education costs. With a mission to enrich Southern West Virginia communities, Beckley Area Foundation provides this award for students of good moral character who maintained at least a B average in high school.

The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation aims to foster human development in West Virginia and Southwestern Pennsylvania by strategically distributing charitable resources. Guided by principles of collaboration and innovation, the Foundation supports community development and health initiatives. Their focus includes enhancing health care accessibility, promoting leadership, and addressing social determinants of health. They prioritize projects that engage diverse community members and encourage cross-sector collaboration to maximize impact and sustainability in these regions.

The AW Environmental Grant Program, backed by American Water Works Company, Inc., aims to support community-driven projects focused on water conservation and the protection of vital water resources. Since 2012, the foundation has invested over $15 million in innovative initiatives that enhance access to clean water and promote responsible water usage in underserved communities. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) charities and educational institutions committed to environmental stewardship.

The Native Voices Endowment Grants, managed by the Endangered Language Fund, support the preservation of endangered languages associated with Native American tribes that interacted with the Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1803-1806. Grants are available for language documentation, revitalization, and educational projects, fostering cultural heritage through various initiatives. Eligible applicants include tribal members and language programs, ensuring the continuation of linguistic traditions and community involvement in revitalizing native languages.

The JFNY Grant for Arts & Cultural Exchange supports U.S. non-profit organizations aiming to enhance understanding of Japanese arts and culture. Eligible projects include performances, workshops, and exhibitions, with priority given to those with additional funding and in areas with limited access to cultural events. Applications must be submitted at least one month prior for online projects and three months for others. The grant covers expenses like travel, publicity, and artist fees, and is reimbursed upon project completion.

The NRA Foundation: West Virginia Grants aims to support charitable initiatives that promote firearm safety, education, and shooting sports. Eligible organizations must hold a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) and can include 501(c)(3) entities, government bodies, and recognized nonprofits. Ineligible groups include labor organizations, private businesses, and individuals. This funding opportunity is dedicated to fostering educational and safety programs aligned with the Foundation's mission.

The NASA WVSGC Ambassador Program offers one-year scholarships to inspire and engage students in STEM. USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service of West Virginia offers up to US $50,000 per year for practices like irrigation improvements, windbreaks, soil conservation, integrated pest management, and organic transition, including a higher cost-share for historically underserved producers.

The NASA WVSGC Undergraduate Research Scholarship offers $5,000 to support undergraduate students in space-related fields to engage in research projects under faculty mentorship. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and enrolled full-time. Funding covers stipends, travel, and supplies, with a requirement for midterm and final reports. This scholarship aims to enhance students' research experience and contribute to the advancement of space science and technology.

The Preschool Development Grant Birth Through Five (PDG B-5) SMART Grant aims to enhance early care and education systems in the U.S. by supporting targeted investments in technology and data analytics. This initiative, led by the Administration for Children and Families, encourages states to improve program quality, family choice, and data-driven decision-making for children from birth to five years old. The funding is designed to create measurable outcomes and strengthen coordination within the mixed-delivery system.
