Best South Dakota Grants for Nonprofits

The Media Partnerships Program, funded by the Bush Foundation, supports nonprofit media organizations in Minnesota and surrounding areas. It provides three-year operating grants to enhance news coverage, foster community engagement, and ensure diverse voices are represented. By promoting transparency and editorial independence, the program aims to amplify storytelling that addresses local issues, ultimately strengthening the region's informational landscape. Eligible organizations can receive up to $150,000 in support to further their mission while collaborating with the Foundation.

Esther Edie Environmental Scholarship

In 1972, Esther Edie brought together several small environmental protection groups from around the state to form the South Dakota Resources Coalition (SDRC). SDRC’s mission was to preserve and enhance our environment, protect our natural resources, and encourage citizens and businesses to adopt sound environmental practices. In its 40-year existence, SDRC fulfilled its mission through education, legislative advocacy, and litigation. Esther Edie was an effective leader in SDRC’s many projects until she died in 2006.

To provide financial support to students attending a college or university in South Dakota, who is pursuing a career in one of the following areas: Environmental Science, Environmental Geography, Environmental Sociology, Natural Resource Management, or Environmental Law.

Siouxland Chapter CFMA Scholarship

Awarded to graduating seniors of high schools in South Dakota.

The Domestic and Sexual Abuse Program (DASA)

Funds are appropriated through the State of South Dakota general funds annually. Funds are awarded to provide domestic violence and sexual assault prevention and education programs, to provide training programs for the staff and volunteers of the shelter service programs and to provide assistance to shelter programs that serve victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The Deadwood Fund Grant, funded by gambling revenue in Deadwood, South Dakota, offers financial assistance ranging from $1,000 to $25,000 for projects aimed at restoring or rehabilitating historic buildings and sites. Eligible applicants include individuals and organizations that demonstrate adherence to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. Projects must provide public historic preservation benefits and often require a dollar-for-dollar match from non-federal sources, ensuring sustainable use after completion.

The XENO PRIZE for Performance Arts, awarded by Franklin Furnace, supports early-career LGBTQ+-identifying performance artists creating new work in 26 states with restrictive gender-affirming laws. This annual prize, established in 2023, offers $5000 to a selected recipient from proposals submitted for the Franklin Furnace FUND for Performance Art. The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2025, encouraging innovative voices in the contemporary performance art landscape.

The RMEF Grant Program lies at the core of advancing our mission.

RMEF established the program in 1986 to provide financial and logistical support to projects that align with our priorities and goals. Grant funds raised by RMEF members, volunteers and generous donors from across the country translate into significantly more conservation accomplishment when matched with partner funds. The RMEF Grant Program also aims to build recognition for RMEF’s work, grow engagement, and boost local fundraising efforts.

Governed by clear guidelines and criteria, the RMEF Grant Program seeks to foster meaningful collaborations and long-term impacts in the conservation of natural resources and outdoor traditions. Grant project partners include federal, state, local, and tribal wildlife and land management agencies, private landowners and local stakeholders, sportsmen and women, and conservation organizations, universities, foundations and the outdoor industry. Eligible projects primarily focus on habitat stewardship, land conservation and access, wildlife management, and hunting heritage.

We support organizations recognized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a 501(c)3 entity, federal, state, local, or tribal government entities, sportsmen’s organizations, or educational institutions. All applicants must have a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) issued by the IRS. RMEF does not offer grants to individuals.

Wildlife Management and Research

RMEF funds wildlife management and research to keep big game healthy and thriving, including disease surveillance, big game-friendly fencing, road management, and scientific studies that expand our understanding of big game habitat, movement, interactions, and overall herd health.

RMEF’s 2026 priorities include:

• Research on migration + connectivity, critical habitat + nutrition, big game population trajectories, challenges to big game populations, and big game management solutions

Ralph and Doris Wallin Scholarship

Awarded to residents of Minnehaha or Lincoln counties in South Dakota.Multiple scholarships are awarded; This award is renewable for one additional year if requirements are met and if funds are available

Kimberly Rose Means — Native American Council of Tribes Scholarship

Awarded to a graduating senior who is an enrolled member of a South Dakota Native American tribe or a South Dakota tribal member who is returning to school. 

The Larson Family Foundation, established in 1990 by Dale Larson, aims to enhance the quality of life for South Dakotans through grants to tax-exempt organizations. With a maximum grant of $100,000, the foundation supports diverse programs addressing basic human needs, including food, clothing, and education. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations in South Dakota. However, the foundation does not fund administrative expenses or individual scholarships, ensuring that contributions directly benefit community services.

Nonprofit-qualified youth corps and similar organizations in South Dakota can seek US $30,000 - US $220,000 to run youth conservation crews on Bureau of Land Management lands. US Department of the Interior: Bureau of Land Management supports environmental education, habitat restoration, trail work, cultural resource projects, and workforce development for young people and veterans through these hands-on initiatives.

Rape Prevention Education Grant

Sexual violence is any sexual activity where consent is not freely given. Sexual violence affects millions of people each year in the United States and can lead to serious health consequences, including mental health conditions, injury, and chronic physical health problems.

The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS, 2016–2017) reports:

• More than 1 in 2 women (over 54%) and nearly 1 in 3 men (about 31%) have experienced contact sexual violence—including rape, being made to penetrate someone, sexual coercion, or unwanted sexual contact—at some point in their lives.
• Nearly 1 in 4 women (about 27%) have experienced completed or attempted rape in their lifetimes.
• About 1 in 26 men (3.8%) have experienced completed or attempted rape, and more than 1 in 10 men (10.7%) have been made to penetrate someone during their lifetime.

The South Dakota Rape Prevention Education (RPE) program is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This funding is authorized through the Violence Against Women Act.

The goal of the RPE program is to strengthen sexual violence prevention efforts by focusing on primary prevention: preventing sexual violence before it occurs. It operates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and six U.S. territories. The CDC provides tools, training, and technical assistance to the RPE program to prevent sexual violence, reduce risk factors, enhance protective factors, promote best practices, analyze data and evaluate prevention efforts.

With the RPE program, South Dakota hopes to lower sexual violence rates against everyone, but especially the target audiences of children, teens, young adults, and Native Americans.

South Dakota NCAA Division II colleges and multisport conference offices can access funding through the National Collegiate Athletic Association to create full-time, entry-level athletics administration internships. Awards of US $30,000 support intern salary plus US $3,000 for professional development, advancing ethnic minority and women’s representation in areas like compliance, budgeting, and student-athlete welfare.

The Rupert Dunklau Foundation Grant supports organizations with 501(c)(3) status, focusing on Lutheran Higher Education, Health and Human Care, and Faith Strengthening. Since its establishment in 1968, the foundation has aimed to provide financial resources to ministries within the Lutheran tradition, particularly in Nebraska and surrounding states. Eligible projects must align with the foundation's mission to promote the welfare of mankind through educational and health initiatives.

The Arts Midwest GIG Fund offers grants ranging from $2,000 to $4,000 to support creative projects and educational events across the Midwest. This funding is available for nonprofit organizations with budgets of $1 million or less, focusing on the arts. Eligible applicants include arts organizations and tribal entities located in specific states. The fund prioritizes those who have not received a grant in the last two years, ensuring diverse cultural engagement and access.

The Disaster Resilience Program, supported by Equal Justice Works, aims to provide free civil legal aid to communities affected by disasters in the Midwest. With funding for attorney and summer law student fellows, the program addresses the unique legal needs of low-income families, helping them recover from the impacts of disasters. This initiative not only stabilizes lives but also promotes resilience in communities by ensuring access to essential legal services.

Alfred & Julia Bucher Education Trust

To provide financial support to graduates of Hyde and Hand counties attending a South Dakota institution of higher learning or the seminary.

Focused on rural economic development, USDA Rural Development invites South Dakota public entities, nonprofits, tribes, and educational institutions to apply for Rural Business Development Grants. Eligible projects support small rural businesses through training, technical assistance, facilities, infrastructure, revolving loan funds, and community or technology-based economic development, with awards ranging from US $10,000 - US $500,000.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, government entities, sportsmen’s groups, and educational institutions in South Dakota can seek funding for land and habitat conservation, access, and wildlife management projects. Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation grants of US $5,000 - US $50,000 support habitat stewardship, land conservation and access, and hunting heritage through collaborative, long-term conservation efforts.

Focused on real estate and housing, USDA Rural Development invites South Dakota government and private nonprofit organizations and federally recognized Tribes to seek funding for mutual self-help housing technical assistance. Grants support supervising very-low- and low-income rural families as they build their own homes, plus recruiting participants and helping with loan applications.

4-H Club Foundation of Tripp County

This application qualifies members of the 4-H Club Foundation of Tripp County Scholarship and the Harold & Twila Zink Scholarship. The number and amount of the scholarship are based on applicants and merit.

To provide financial support to current and past students of the Tripp County area pursuing post-secondary education at a South Dakota institute with preference given to participants in Tripp County 4-H.

The EPSCoR Research Infrastructure Improvement-Focused Collaborations Program (RII-FEC) aims to enhance research capabilities in eligible jurisdictions by fostering partnerships among government, higher education, and industry. This program supports interdisciplinary teams of researchers to tackle significant challenges in STEM fields, promoting diversity and broadening participation. By integrating Minority-Serving Institutions and early-career faculty from underrepresented backgrounds, RII-FEC seeks to build sustainable STEM capacity and drive impactful discoveries across regions.

Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations with at least three years of status and a $100,000+ budget in South Dakota communities served by RBC Wealth Management can seek funding for workforce skills, inclusive prosperity, and environmental sustainability programs. RBC Foundation USA supports initiatives like job readiness, youth career pathways, financial well-being, accessibility improvements, and community-focused climate and energy projects.

The Strategic Alliance Matching Grant - Division II offers financial support to enhance ethnic minority and gender representation in mid- to senior-level athletics administration roles across NCAA Division II institutions. With an annual budget of $860,000, the grant aims to fund up to 20 schools and conferences each year. Eligible applicants must be active Division II members and are encouraged to collaborate with their human resources departments during the proposal process, ensuring compliance with grant requirements.

The Coaching Enhancement Grant - Division II aims to enhance diversity in NCAA coaching by providing financial support for new assistant coaching positions. This grant specifically targets increased representation of ethnic minorities and women in athletics. Selected schools receive funding for three years to cover salaries and benefits, totaling $370,000 annually for up to 21 institutions. Eligible schools must be active NCAA Division II members committed to these diversity efforts.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) is offering funding through the Small Business Transportation Technical Assistance Center (SBTTAC) for Region 3. This initiative aims to assist small and disadvantaged businesses in transportation. The funding opportunity is part of a cooperative agreement for one award covering a 12-month base year, with the potential for two additional option years based on performance. This support is crucial for enhancing small business capabilities in the transportation sector.

The Bush Prize: Native Nations honors Native-led organizations committed to innovative solutions in their communities. Grants can reach up to $500,000, covering 25% of the organization’s previous fiscal year expenses. This annual award emphasizes collaboration and resourcefulness, supporting entities that are deeply valued in their communities and have proven success in addressing challenges. The program, a partnership with four community grant partners, aims to empower organizations in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and 23 Native Nations.
