William Pretty Jr. Scholarship Endowment

About Dr. William “Bill” Pretty Jr.

The family of Dr. William “Bill” Pretty Jr. established the William Pretty Jr. Scholarship Endowment in memory of their beloved husband and father after he passed away on September 28, 2003, at the age of 59. Through this fund, his family wants to continue Pretty’s commitment to assist and inspire youth.

Dr. Pretty believed that with determination, perseverance, and a strong belief in God, anything was possible. He graduated from Shaw University and began his career in the federal government helping disadvantaged youth. After ten years, and with knowledge gained from helping in his father’s restaurant, Pretty became the first African American McDonald’s operator in North Carolina. Along with his wife Mildred, he operated three McDonald’s locations for 27 years in Sanford, NC.

Pretty had a special rapport with young people and always went out of his way to nurture them. His motto was, “the work experience, no matter how short, is very valuable.” To support his motto, even when overstaffed, he always hired young people at his McDonald’s.

With Mildred, Bill served his community in multiple ways. He was a trustee of Shaw University and First Calvary Baptist Church in Sanford and served on many other boards and committees. Mildred was a board member of the Ronald McDonald House in Durham.

His family created the William Pretty Jr. Scholarship Endowment at NCCF after the Black McDonald’s Operators Association approached them about the idea.

Dr. Pretty was a true humanitarian. His love for people and his outreaching personality created valuable and long-lasting relationships. The Pretty family is proud to support students like him.

Geraldine Mayo Beveridge Scholarship Endowment

About Geraldine Mayo Beveridge

Geraldine “Gerry” Mayo Beveridge taught school in Carteret County for 40 years. She was a Home Economics teacher and thought of her students as her children; she and husband “Captain David” had none of their own. Gerry would discreetly provide classroom supplies and clothing items for students in need. She quietly contributed money toward college for capable students who couldn’t afford it.

Gerry’s concern for students continued after retirement. As a member of the Carteret County Retired School Personnel (CCRSP), Gerry convinced members of the importance of awarding a scholarship to a graduating senior in each high school – East Carteret, West Carteret, and later, Croatan. To raise money, she organized bake sales and brought plants and canned foods to sell to members. The scholarships, though small, were a great effort for members and were greatly appreciated by recipients.

Gerry left a considerable sum of money to CCRSP with the expectation that it be managed well and used for scholarships. Today, the Geraldine Mayo Beveridge Scholarship is awarded to qualifying graduating seniors who want to teach Vocational Education, now called Career and Technical Education.

Gerry’s passion for her students and her love of education continues through this scholarship. She was an amazing educator whose philanthropy will last in perpetuity.

Frequently asked questions

If you are located in the Virginia area, there is a wide variety of funding sources for nonprofits currently being offered. Right now there are more than 200+ individual open grants available, totaling $54,080,717 in funding. For organizations interested in pursuing grant funding in Virginia, the median grant size is $12,000. However, those who may need more funding do have vast opportunities, as there are currently 57 grant opportunities that are over $25,000. More specifically, over 3,000+ grants focus on education and more than 2,000+ grant opportunities are focused on art & culture.

Nearly half of the more than 200+ grants available in Virginia come from private foundations and have a wide variety of fields in which they support. There are also plenty of opportunities on the federal, state, and local government levels, as well as a few grants being offered by corporate sponsors. Here’s a breakdown of where you'll find the most grants available:

  • Private Foundations: An impressive 86 grants come from private foundations that focus on the environment, education, and basic human needs, including grants from the William and Helen Thomas Charitable Trust, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, and The Abelard Foundation Inc.
  • Federal, State & Local Government: With 64 grant opportunities available at the state and local level, nonprofits that focus on environmental issues like land/habitat conservation, farms and farming, agriculture, and water resource management have opportunities from state and local government agencies like the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. There are also a few grants available on the federal level from the USDA, U.S. Department of Commerce, and the United States Department of Agriculture, and these also focus on rural development, agriculture, and water management and sanitation issues.
  • Corporate Funders: There are 25 grants available from corporations, and many corporations like Food Lion, Wawa, Publix Super Markets, and the American Water Works offer some funding opportunities to support fields like education, food access and hunger, and a variety of environmental issues in Virginia.

You should do your research on not only the amount of funding being offered by these grantors but also their focus. Keep in mind that government grants often have larger awards than those on the corporate level, but they also have equally large compliance requirements.

Based on the data we have now, the best time to apply for grants in Virginia is in Q1, which is when about 35.5% of deadlines for grants land. This period offers nonprofits the most opportunities to secure funding. Q3 has come in second with a smaller amount of grant deadlines, with 24.4%. Comparatively, Q4 is the grant period with the least activity, coming in at only 19.7%. To maximize your odds of winning grant funding, be aware of the peak fundraising periods.

The nonprofit funding landscape throughout Virginia has shown significant activity across the past several years. Based on the funding reports sent to the IRS, overall grant funding reached more than $6.05 billion in 2021 and then rose to more than $6.39 billion in 2022. The largest area for funding was single-organization support. Likewise, the top areas that received the most funding were Fairfax County, Arlington County, and Alexandria City.
